Having a party? Don't forget the Swedish Glogg! Among many other traditions, it's customary in Sweden to celebrate Christmas Eve with a "smorgasbord," which means Swedish buffet with family and friends.
This feast features all of your favorite Swedish foods (who knew that you could put fish in so many different things!) and is traditionaly served with Glogg, a spiced wine served hot.
The recipe below is authenitc and meant to be shared among many, so enjoy with friends. However, like Sally (from When Harry met Sally) I am one of those people who like things to be served on the side, so I usually serve the raisins and almonds in cups on the side and let my guests add according to their liking. Happy Holidays!
How to make Swedish Glogg
Start with a regular sized pot and boil 2 cups of water. Add 3 cinnamon sticks, 12 cardamon seeds and 12 whole cloves. Add the zest from one orange and 1 cup of sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and then remove from heat. Let this mixture steep, overnight if time allows. Just before serving, strain the sugar water mixture into a large pot. Add 2 cups of Brandy, 4 cups of Muscatel Wine and 4 cups of Port Wine. Heat this mixture, but do not boil (or even simmer) as you will cook off the alcohol. Add 1 cup of chopped, blanched almonds and 1 cup of raisins or serve these items on the side. Serve hot in mugs. Enjoy responsibly with friends! |
