This drink dates back to around 1890 and was named after Dr. Thomas O. Gimlette. A naval surgeon in the British Royal Navy, the good doctor noticed that limes provided protection against scurvy because they are a good source of vitamin C.
Adding a bit of gin to the lime juice encouraged sailors to drink up and helped them to stay healthy. More recently, it's become popular to prepare this drink with vodka rather than gin. Anyway you mix it, this classic cocktail will help you get your daily dose of vitamin C.
How to make a Gimlet Cocktail
| Grab a cocktail shaker and fill it with ice. Add 3 1/2 oz of Gin (or Vodka) and 1/2 oz to 1 oz of Lime Juice depending on your personal preference. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or pour with ice into a old fashioned glass. For a finishing touch, garnish with a Lime and serve.
