Anyone who has seen the movie Moulin Rouge! probably remembers the Green Fairy flying off the bottle of absinthe, but what is the deal?
Also known as the "Green Fairy," this anise-flavored liquor is made from herbs including wormwood. The connection to Moulin Rouge! comes from its connection to Bohemian culture at the beginning of the last century.
Despite its reputation for being highly addictive, there is nothing that gives this spirit special powers besides its higher proof (usually between 90 and 150). However, its reputation did result in the ban of the Green Fairy in the United States in 1915 as well as many European countries.
Fast forward to the 1990's when absinthe was brought back in Europe and has since made its way back around the world. Nowadays, there are about 200 brands being manufactured in over 10 different countries.
